The 2015 Salmon Creek Update brought many members and several nonmembers together for nearly a packed house at Farrar’s Bistro in January. All were there to visit with one another and hear from Assistant Chief Shawn Newberry, Clark County Fire District 6 and Melissa Martin, Clark County Public Health.
Chief Shawn Newberry addressed questions from the audience, but also shared a brief history on changes and updates the district has made since 2008. The district continues to grow and place more and more demand on nearly every station in the district and the crews operating.
They continue to evaluate their operating procedures realizing they can’t be everything to everybody anymore. He explained they are looking into priority 4 and 5 calls and what might be some options for me and people who waiting for help.
He also explained why they can’t absorb into all SUV’s that respond to lower level calls like City of Vancouver can, so they still have to send the fire truck or engine at times.
Melissa Martin talked about programs she and her department are doing in the community including ones with local restaurants that aren’t chains. This includes getting restaurants to put less sodium in their meals, offering sides for kids other than fries and not charging for those, etc.
She talked about the challenges she is facing and the restaurants that have stepped up and already partnered with her, including SCBG member Farrar’s Bistro.
